National Schools Regatta 2023 – Junior 16 Girls Double Preview

The JW16 2x event is one that is sometimes glossed over by rowing fans but these smaller boats especially at the junior level can have some very exciting and fast racing. For many in this category, this may be their first time doing a 1900m TT and then a 2000m 6-lane race. For how close we have seen margins for medals in previous years, a little advice to those who are entered – prioritising your recovery can make all the difference. Rehydrate, rest and refuel effectively and it could give you that needed edge.

Sir William Perkins School Rowing Club

Going off first in the time trial is not an easy feat, with all of your competition watching you row off. But this a challenge the pairing from SWPS will have no issue with. They recently won the double at JSR, the most recent race at Dorney for the J16 2x, winning the event by open water, SWPS should take confidence in their performance from that race and bring it into the time trial on Sunday morning.

Wycliffe Junior Rowing Club

A stalwart of the junior women’s circuit, with outstanding performances from their senior squad both domestically and internationally, I have no doubt that this J16 crew will bring the technical prowess expected and known from Wycliffe crews, and apply it to the continuously changing conditions at Eton Dorney. With 5th at JSR only 5 seconds behind SWPS. Wycliffe will look to close that gap in the side-by-side racing.

Tideway Scullers School

A little further down in the start order is TSS, a club known for their quality sculling on both the men’s and women’s side of their squad. The TSS double won Poplar Regatta by a comfortable margin. And with strong result at JSR coming 6th. Just behind the double from Wycliffe, it will be exciting to see who come out on top.

Honorable Mentions

Lea RC – coming 2nd and 3rd to Scullers at Poplar have the potential to fight for a medal and if they manage their race well they may be able to even overturn Wycliffe. Also Kew House School – a newer rowing outfit who are slowly getting better and having more promising results. They would definitely be aiming to A Final.

Final Prediction

  1. SWPS
  2. Wycliffe
  3. Scullers
  4. Lea RC
