Head of the Trent is one of the larger head races of the season, with a course of 5700m. With only three entries for the J16 8+ category it is sure to be a close race, especially given the high standard of all of the crews entered.
Bedford Modern Sch 16.1
Bedford Modern School have had a very successful season with their J16 men. Beginning with a win in the Op. 4+ at 2018 Bedford Regatta, they also took first place in the four at St Neot’s Head, and followed this with strong performances at Bedford Small Boats Head in the 4+ as well as 2nd and 3rd at 2018 Nottingham Head of the Trent and 6th for the J16 1st 8 at 2018 School’s Head, with a time which was only 27s slower than the crew which took 3rd place. The squad also did well at 2018 Fours and Eights Head, and have raced well at smaller local events, such as the Cambridge Head to Head.
Eton COLTS A and B
As one of the primary rowing schools, Eton has two entries for this race. The J16 crews had successes at Schools’ Head of the River 2018, taking 3rd place in the Ch 8+, 1st in Sch. 2nd 8+, 3rd in Sch.3rd 8+ and 9th and 13th place in the Ch J16 8+ category. In addition to this, the crews took 1st and 3rd place at 2018 Teddington Head in the Op. J16 eights. With two entries for a race with only three boats, and seeing their past strength in the eight, I’d imagine that the Eton crews will do very well.
Predictions
All the crews entered are strong contenders for first place. I’d imagine that the Eton A crew will take first, with most likely the Bedford Modern School boat second, closely followed by Eton B. Whatever the outcome, it will certainly be exciting to see how the race pans out.
