Nottingham head of the Trent is a race spanning 5700m from Clifton Bridge to TS Orion with a range of different available events. The WJ16 4x has five different clubs competing including Newark, Leicester/Loughborough, Becket, Nottingham and Nottingham and Union. Over this long course with a total of three difficult bends to navigate, the overall results will be dependent on both the athlete’s skills and strength.
Becket
This club has had some strong results over previous years, especially in the single categories. This shows that these skills can be coached throughout the years and allow the athletes to transfer these skills into the larger sculling boats and so this will be essential over this 5700m course in order to row efficiently and conserve energy.
Nottingham
This club has often entered into the quadruple sculls category and so they will have some experience in this event. The girls in this squad have been able to become acquainted with each other’s rowing styles as they rowed in the WJ15 4x+ last year at National Schools’ Regatta finishing in a time of 4:03.77.
Nottingham and Union
This club has some clear experience in the sculling areas of these events, as seen in the J16 1x win at Newark Head over the previous two years. This shows that these athletes have a good endurance base after having completed this 15-minute race. Good sculling results in doubles at this event also shows their strengths in steering and power and so we expect to see this club competing for the top places in this category.
We expect to see Becket, Nottingham and Nottingham and Union competing for the top places in the WJ16 4x category as they have developed valuable skills in their past racing experiences which will be essential in both navigating and enduring this 5700m course.
