As we begin to enter the Spring season, the Oarsport Junior Sculling Head, held at at Dorney Lake, will be one of the largest junior sculling events of the year. Hosting a total of 523 crews, the race will have sculling evetns from J14 up to J17 and an open junior event. The 4x+ event will have a total of 60 crews from some of the top rowing clubs and schools in the country. Most of these schools only have one or two boats registered, meaning that this race will have representation from many boathouses across the country. Here is a preview of some of the crews competing for gold in the J15 quad event of the Junior Sculling Head:
Wallingford RC:
Wallingford Rowing Club has two boats registered in the J15 4x+ event at the Junior Sculling Head. Over the past year, they have been seen competing in this event quite frequently, making them stand out as a competitor for first place. A Wallingford RC J15 quad placed first and third at the Marlow Town Regatta. And in the 2019 Junior Sculling Head, they pulled a time of 6:48 on the second lap, just twenty seconds behind first place. If thye keep this performance up, they’ll surely be competitive for the upcoming regatta.
Hereford Cathedral School BC:
Hereford Cathedral School Boat Club is another rowing club that puts an emphasis on its junior 4x+ performances. Though they haven’t been seen in this event at some major regattas, when they show up, they perform well. At the National Schools’ Regatta in 2021, they dominated the A Final for the J16 4x+ event, easily placing first by six seconds. This regatta covered the same distance as the Junior Sculling Head. But their skill has also been proven on this course. At the 2019 Oarsport Junior Sculling Head, which was the last year the event was held, they placed sixth out of 70 boats registered, beating out many competitive crews.
Trentham BC:
Trentham Boat Club was the victor in the J15 4x+ event at the last Junior Sculling Head, pulling a time of 6:57 for the first lap and 6:28 for the second lap. The former time made them the only boat to go sub-seven minutes on the first lap, and the latter lap made the boat one of only two to go sub-6:30. But this crew has also proven themselves over long distances. At the Chester Long Distance Sculling event of 2021, the club came in second in the J15 4x+ event, with a time of 20:14.15.
Prediction:
Because there are so many boats registered for the race, it’s tough to make a preduction about who the winners will be, especially because in this sport, it’s impossible to compare times from different events due to varying conditions. So, I will abstain from making a prediction about this event, but any crew listed above is bound to be successful in rowing the course very quickly.
