Oarsport Junior Sculling Head 2023 – Junior 16 Men’s Quads Preview

The Oarsport Junior Sculling Head will once again be raced on the prestigious Olympic Lake at Eton Dorney and will compromise of two 1.8km pieces, one up and one down the lake. This year, the J16 quad category has seen 51 entries from 40 different clubs.

Windsor Boys School

The Windsor Boys School, reigning champions of this event in 5 separate boat classes, have entered two boats into the J16 quad in the hopes of repeating last year’s victory in this event. They look to be in advantageous position having qualified their J16 quad to represent Thames Upriver team at the upcoming Junior Interregional Regatta. These results show the Windsor Boys School will be a very tough opposition to overcome.

Trentham Boat Club

Trentham Boat Club, who finished 2nd in the J15 quad event last year, have also entered two boats into the event for this year hoping to repeat their podium finish from last season. They have also had plenty of success recently having qualified their J16 double for the North West Team for JIRR, as well as picking up gold medal finishes at the recent North of England Head. Looking at these recent results, it would be unwise to overlook Trentham Boat Clubs’ chances of repeating a podium finish.

Predictions

As it would be impossible to discuss all 51 crews racing, I have chosen the two that I believe will be the strongest contenders for the gold medal position although ultimately think The Windsor Boys School will finish on top due to their constant dominance at the highest level. Despite this, there will be very intense and close racing between the crews targeting medal positions such as the Tideway Scullers School and Sir William Borlase’s Grammar School
