These crews will be battling it out, fresh off the rivalries formed by the Schools’ Head of the River the day before. This marks the final of the head races before we move on to regatta season, and these girls will want to go out with a bang!
Wycliffe College Boat Club
Wycliffe College Boat Club make a habit of showcasing talented and determined crews, and has shown success after success. Known for their aggressive yet controlled rowing style, Wycliffe will be looking to dominate. Although their first quad is in the WJ18 category, being in a Wycliffe second quad is no mean feat. In past years, girls in their positions have gone on to medal internationally. With their impeccably high standard, I predict they will be wearing one of the medals by the end of the day.
Hartpury University and College Boat Club
Hartpury University and College Boat Club’s WJ17 quad will be set to make a strong impression. Known for their focus on both technique and endurance, Hartpury’s junior women’s squad has been steadily growing and improving. A program that few competitors can match, Hartpury consistently sends rowers to international podiums. Because they have not entered a WJ18 quad, this crew may be built around the 23/24 season’s power double- Asquith and Janes (AB Severn). With undoubtedly experienced rowers in all their seats, they should be aiming to secure a top spot at the Head.
Shiplake College Boat Club
Shiplake College Boat Club will be bringing their A-game next Wednesday. With high expectations following one of their most impressive seasons to date in the eight, it will be interesting if the girls can transfer their proficiency from one blade to two. They have consistently remained on the podium all season, and while their top quad may be in the WJ18 category, I would be surprised if this race were any different.
Prediction
1 – Wycliffe College Boat Club
2 – Hartpury University and College Boat Club
3 – Shiplake Colllege Boat Club
Others to watch: Henley Rowing Club, Sir William Perkins’s School Boat Club and Walton Rowing Club.
