Pairs Head 2021 – Open Intermediate Double Preview

Nine crews will take to the Tideway this weekend to compete in the Open Intermediate Double event at the notorious Pairs Head. The tier below the championship category, these intermediate crews are by no means lacking speed and will look to demonstrate this over the 4500m course on Saturday the 2nd of October.

Tideway Scullers School

As well as their crew in the Championship event, Tideway Scullers will also be fielding a crew in the intermediate category in the form of Palmer and Storey. With Head Coach Kieran Clark taking this club in an upward trajectory in recent years, I’m sure this crew will be gunning for the win of this event as they are coming from an ever-improving men’s sculling programme at Tideway Scullers school.

City of Oxford Rowing Club

This relatively small programme of City of Oxford RC has produced some notable results in recent years, including reaching the second day of Henley Royal Regatta in the Britannia Challenge Cup. The crew of Swiss and Kerswell-Jensen will be looking to continue this trend of good results and I believe they could be a contender for the win in this event. Swiss placed a very respectable eighth place overall at Scullers Head earlier this month, proving this crew to be on good form heading into this race.

London Rowing Club

London have entered three boats into this nine-boat field in the Intermediate double category. This historic club which has existed since 1856 has been going from strength to strength in recent years, reaching the semi-final in the Britannia Challenge Cup at Henley Royal Regatta this year. The crews of Smallman and Musson, O’Reilly and O’Reilly and Hui-le Marer and Campbell-Williams will be looking to continue this excellent form this weekend, however it is difficult to predict which crew will be the fastest.

Prediction

This field is packed with high calibre rowers ready to put in their best performance on the Tideway this weekend. My prediction is that Tideway Scullers School will take the win, followed by City of Oxford Rowing Club and then one of the London Rowing Club crews.
