The J16 2x event will be competitive from the top of the timesheet all the way through to the bottom. The head season is fully underway but this Sunday’s race is the first event of the season on the Tideway. For some, it will be the first time racing down the iconic course.
There are 19 crews racing in this event with the field being split up into three categories of Senior, Intermediate and Club. There is a strong representation from some of the country’s top rowing schools but some smaller names will also be hoping to prove that they are on the pace this season.
Maidenhead Rowing Club
Maidenhead Rowing Club are fielding two crews in the Senior category of this event. There will be fierce competition between Bird/Ioras and Lewis/Harlow as both boats will want to come away from this event with the fastest time and the status of the ‘top dog’ at the boat house.
Shiplake College Boat Club
Shiplake are a top rowing school and know what it takes to win events. They will be hoping to use their history as motivation for a top result this weekend. Hillier and Middleton will be hoping to use their power and technique to clock a solid time down the tideway.
Northwich School Boat Club
Having raced twice already at the Wallingford and Chester Long Distance Heads, Northwich will hope that their J16 2x can get a strong result to keep their season’s momentum going. Catmull and Sergent will be looking to scull cleanly and get a fast time down the long course.
St Paul’s School Boat Club
Runners up in the 16 2x last year, St Paul’s will be hoping to do one better this season and come away with the win. They have entered two crews in this event with Lavington/Marshall and Harker/Davies and both will hope to handle the pressure of rowing for one of the best rowing schools and succeed down the course.
Eton College Boat Club
Eton have been an impressive force in the world of rowing. They will hope that the sculling side of the boat club can become as equally as successful and that could start this weekend at the Pairs Head. They have three crews in the club event and will be looking to come away with three solid results.
It will be a competitive event with crews looking to prove their pace against some of the finest competition. The weather means that there will be some difficult conditions for the rowers to deal with so a crew who can keep their composure and length in these circumstances will do well.
