Pairs head is the first head race of the season that takes place on the Tideway over a 4.5km distance and is a tricky but rewarding course if raced and steered correctly. For the girls in this Championship Pair category it will serve as the start of a very competitive season. There is no shortage of talented rowers in this category and therefore should yield some brilliant racing.
Kingston Rowing Club– Last season Kingston proved to be a force to be reckoned with, as they produced a highly successful WJ16 Coxed Four that both Medcalf and Quin were in- with wins at Henley Women’s Regatta, NSR and they won in a Coxless Four in the GB V France match. I’m assuming this four has been split down into two pairs and if so these two crews will be very strong competition.
Lea Rowing Club– Kingston is not the only club in this category that had rowers in last year’s GB V France match, Millard was in the 8 that won and was in the Coxed WJ16 Four that won at National Championships. They have entered two pairs, both of which have crew members who have been very successful, so they will also be ones to watch out for.
Tideway Scullers School– The Tideway girls also seem to have a good season behind them, Bentley was in the 4th placing Championship Quad at NSR last season and she was part of the double sent to Henley Women’s Regatta, so that solid season will prove valuable coming into this race.
Putney High School– Putney high school has yielded some very good results in the last few years, especially their win at Henley Women’s Regatta in the Junior Coxed Fours last season. Therefore, I’m expecting these two pairs to be competitive based off the growing reputation of Putney and their success in sweeping events.
Predictions:
This is a tough call to make, but I think the win will go to either Kingston or Lea based on their impressive results last season, with Kingston marginally being my favourite. However, the standard is high in this category and will make for some very exciting racing from all crews.
