This weekend five junior women will challenge for a first place at Head of the Nene in Peterborough. This might be the first race of the season for some of them because of a highly interrupted season, so this could be a useful predictor for results to come in the later summer racing season.
Kings Ely School Rowing Club
Kings Ely School Rowing Club will have had a good season this year with over 30 miles of uninterrupted river. Mainly focused on sculling, we can expect some excellent technique from a long-established boat club. Garrod will be the first rower from Kings Ely School Rowing Club racing down the course for the Head of the Nene. She has some exciting previous results including a first place finish in the C-final of the Championship Women’s Quads at National School’s Regatta and with a 37-second win at Star Head of the river in a single scull, we can be expecting great things from Garrod this coming weekend.
Oundle School Rowing Club
Taylor is a Junior 17 athlete who last year made an impressive switch from Women’s Junior 16 quads to championship quads just in time for National School’s Regatta. Taylor and her crew achieved a fourth place finish in the Junior Sculling Regatta B-Final in the Women’s Junior 16 coxless quads, and then they stepped it up with a majority Junior 16 crew to challenge a third place finish in the National Schools C-final in the championship quads. Having raced in the same event as Garrod from Kings Ely School Rowing Club, we can expect a fierce race from Taylor who will look to try and challenge a podium place this weekend.
Oundle School Rowing Club
Shields from the Oundle School Rowing Club made the same transition from Junior 16 to championship quads last year. Both Shields and Taylor achieved excellent results despite the age group transition. This shows that the Oundle is developing an excellent aptitude for sculling in both of these girls, and we can hopefully expect some great results from them.
Predictions
Garrod – Kings Ely Rowing Club
Taylor – Oundle School Rowing Club
Shields – Oundle School Rowing Club
