The Princeton Chase, a 3-mile head race style regatta on Princeton’s Lake Carnegie, brings together 41 competitive collegiate crews to battle it out on one of the biggest venues in the Northeast. Each team is looking to establish itself as a force in the early stages of the rowing season and will use this regatta as a means of comparing the early training with their competitors, ahead of the winter season. With some of the biggest names in American collegiate rowing headlining the event, powerhouse programs like Princeton, Penn, Wisconsin, and Columbia, we are in for an exciting regatta.
Princeton University
Princeton University heads into this race with an aura of invincibility after an undefeated domestic season last year, bolstered by their triumph at the prestigious Henley Royal Regatta, where they took home the Ladies’ Plate. Led by standout athletes Marcus Chute and Theo Bell, the Tigers are well-poised for a strong performance, particularly on their home waters. Lake Carnegie is all to familiar for these athletes which gives them a considerable advantage as they race in front of home fans eager to see them dominate once more, especially after a somewhat disappointing seventh-place finish at the Head of the Charles (HOCR).
University of Pennsylvania
Penn’s crew, driven by elite rower Sam Sullivan, who stroked the U.S. 8+ to a silver medal and competed at the infamous SH Netz Regatta, promises to bring fierce competition to Lake Carnegie. Fresh off an eighth-place finish at the HOCR, the Quakers are riding a wave of momentum and are looking to continue gaining speed. Their powerful lineup, experience, and recent form could well position them to challenge Princeton’s dominance and make waves as one of the top crews in this event.
University of Wisconsin
Though Wisconsin finished 19th at the HOCR, the Badgers are a storied program with deep roots in collegiate rowing. Known for their consistent dominance within the Big Ten conference, Wisconsin has been working to regain the national attention they commanded in years past. With a well-rounded and determined crew, they look to leverage this race as a step towards reclaiming their powerhouse status and building a solid foundation for the upcoming season.
Columbia University
Columbia University’s crew is currently navigating a rebuilding phase, as evidenced by their 30th-place finish at the HOCR, compounded by a time penalty that hurt their overall standing. Though they may not be the favorites heading into the Princeton Chase, the Lions are looking to lay down some good speed and gain invaluable race experience. With a young but steadily improving squad, Columbia has its sights set on growth and gradually climbing the ranks over the coming years.
Prediction
As crews hit the water for this year’s Princeton Chase, Princeton University’s undefeated record in 2023 and home-course advantage give them a clear edge. Still, Penn’s star power, Wisconsin’s resurgence, and Columbia’s tenacity will ensure a hard-fought race. Other programs Georgetown University and the College of the Holy Cross, both having entered multiple boats, will be nipping at the heels of the pack leaders, hoping for a surprise overturn. The chase format and challenging length promise an exciting display of endurance, skill, and coxing strategy, as all four teams look to set a benchmark for the season ahead. I predict Princeton to claim victory on home waters, with the remaining ivies battling it out for the remaining podium spots.
