The Reading Amateur Regatta is held over two days along a 1500m course. As this is a direct side-by-side course many crews use it as Henley training for either Henley Women’s Regatta or Henley Royal Regatta. We often see strong competition at this regatta and this year is no different, with multiple entries across all the different events.
The below preview relates only to the Saturday event, with many of the same clubs competing on the Sunday.
Women’s Quads
St Edward’s School won gold in the coxed fours at National Schools’ Regatta just a few weeks ago. At BUCS Regatta just gone, De Montfort University managed to place 22nd in the Women’s Intermediate Quads and 16th in the Metropolitan Regatta. Also at the Metropolitan Regatta was Thames Rowing Club who came seventh. Reading University came second at BUCS Regatta just gone. Looking at this entry list it’ll be a strong collection of races.
Women’s Doubles
The University of Birmingham raced at the Metropolitan Regatta and came first, however, this was as a composite with Leander Club. For the Reading Amateur Regatta it is an all Birmingham University crew indicating a different level of speed. Reading University also were present at the Metropolitan Regatta and came in just behind the University of Birmingham composite crew. Hartpury University and Wallingford Rowing Club are also racing in this category.
Women’s Singles
For the singles event tree we have the Birmingham University and Reading University both splitting their doubles into singles. City of Oxford Rowing Club are also making an appearance along with Mortlake Anglian and Alpha Boat Club and St George’s College. Excitingly we have a sculler from Brisbane & GPS Rowing Club from Australia, who will be also racing at Henley Women’s Regatta along with possibly trying for Henley Royal Regatta.
Predictions
Overall, I predict Thames and Reading university to have a tough race in the Women’s Quads for the medal. University of Birmingham and Reading University to have a tight side-by-side for the winning space on the podium. Finally I believe that the Birmingham sculler could be battling the Australian. All in all, incredible competition is showing up to Reading Amateur Regatta for the women’s sculling events. Best of luck ladies!
