Racing over 4,500m, Rutherford Head of the River will take place on Saturday, racing from Scotswood to Newburn. In this category there are only three eights entered, Aberdeen Schools Rowing Association has entered two eights and Glasgow Academy Rowing Club has entered one eight. With these limited entry numbers in the Junior Women’s Eights category, we can expect some tight results during this day of racing.
Aberdeen Schools Rowing Association “A”
ASRA have entered two boats into this category, emphasising the potential success of this team at to one of the opening races of the season . Aberdeen School’s rowing programme has had success over the past seasons in particular having three girls gain international GB vest last summer. With one athlete Jemima Aspinall racing in the coxless four at Couple de la Jeunesse winning a bronze and silver at the weekend of racing. Furthermore, they saw further success in their two athletes racing at the U19 World Championships in Canada in August, with Sophie Sinclair winning a silver in the junior women’s eight and Penny Irvine finishing in sixth place in the women’s pair both competing in some tight racing. As well as this, last season saw club success in the coxless four at National Schools’ Regatta achieving a gold, and a win in the Groton School Challenge Cup at Henley Women’s Regatta. With these two major wins last season this further shows the depth of the squad we will likely see this Saturday. With this recent established success and confidence in the programme it will likely mean they will be quick down the course and a likely favourite. them to ensure they race their fastest down the course and this will therefore be a crew to watch.
Glasgow Academy Rowing Club
This eight from the Glasgow Academy Rowing Club will look to race and compete fiercely against the two boats from Aberdeen in this category. Carrying success from last season with a gold in the women’s championship Single at National Schools’ Regatta and a silver in the Womens Championship Pair, this is a rowing club that will be looking for a fight on race day. Using last seasons successes will be a valuable tool for this crew in enabling them to produce their fastest time down the race course. Whilst this is likely one of the first races of many for this crew in the season they can be sure to use it as a starting point to help them achieve yet another successful season.
Prediction
With two crews entered into the category for racing on Saturday, I think we can expect Aberdeen Schools Rowing Association to be a threat and dominate this race. However, we must not ignore the success of athletes in the Glasgow Academy eight and therefore with the talent entered in this category it is hard to pinpoint one exact winner and it will all be up to how they are able to perform on the day.
