San Diego Crew Classic 2025 – Women’s Youth Eights Preview

The San Diego Crew Classic is the premier early Spring rowing regatta hosted in San Diego, California, USA. Location seems not to have phased some entrants to this year’s Youth Women’s Eight event, drawing top East Coast names for an early season showdown, which may directly foreshadow the national final in June. Irrespectively, the crew classic provides teams with the platform to showcase their winter work, realistically for the first time since the Head of the Charles.

Yes, it’s Spring, some states still have snow and ice on their docks and are weeks away from a race, but for some “The Rowing Season Starts Here – The 2025 San Diego Crew Classic”.

Saugatuck Rowing Club

Traveling across the United States from Westport, Connecticut, Saugatuck Rowing Club continues their strong tradition of top performances. Finishing 3rd in the Crew Classic in 2024 and 3rd at the 2024 USRowing Youth National Championships, Coach Mike O’Hara has established his crew as a top national contender, focused on racing the top programs and positioning Saugatuck as a podium staple. Saugatuck Coach Michael O’Hara brings his teams to California to race outstanding crews early in the season and to get some needed training and racing in warmer weather. “It’s a great way to kick off the season for sure. Plus, San Diego is an outstanding town and Mission Beach a great venue”.

Marin Rowing Association

Marin Rowing Association placed 2nd in last year’s San Diego Crew Classic and 2nd in the 2024 USRowing Youth National Championship and will defend its reputation as a top-tier rowing program. Historically, Marin is a top-performing program that yearly develops top-tier and championship teams that compete at the highest level. They competed at The Henley Royal Regatta in 2024 following the USRowing Youth National Championship, ultimately losing in the semi-finals. Year after year Marin Rowing Association, athletes and coaches competed at the highest level developing their athletes and coaches to excel in “the art and sport of rowing” a standard stated by their Executive Director,  U19 Head Coach and 37 year Marin Rowing Association coach Sandy Armstrong.

Newport  Aquatic Center

Newport Aquatic Center, develops athletes in every boat class and has built a deep and accomplished rowing club year after year since 1987. Placing first in 2024 at The San Diego Crew Classic, they will look to repeat last year’s success. Newport Aquatic Rowing Association excels in developing athletes and coaches who compete at the highest levels, similarly seasoning their athletes at Henley Royal Regatta last year.

Prediction

This should be a spectacular race with the last strokes deciding everything. Look to a photo finish with Saugatuck Rowing Club, Marin Rowing Association, Newport Aquatic Rowing Association within seats of each other at the finish line. Saugatuck Rowing Club and Marin Rowing Association should finish First and Second. However, Newport Aquatic Rowing Association is always a strong finisher and could upset the podium order.  All of these finalists should qualify for The 2025 USRowing Youth National Championships in Sarasota Florida in June.
