A note from the Commissioning Editor
Yet again, as it has been with so many times with articles and races this season, I am obliged to write a disclaimer above the article. The cancellation of School’s Head, like with all events that have not take place, will be a disappointment to everyone. This one is more significant, with weather finally being on our side, the community thought we would finally get some good racing and start to put together a season, Coronavirus had other ideas. Anyway, here is the Ch J15 8+ as it would have been if School’s Head happened.
In a season which has been characterised so far by race cancellation due to inclement weather, there aren’t many results from the current season for the crews entered. Despite uncertainty hanging over whether Schools’ Head will be given the go ahead amidst the Covid-19 outbreak, here is a preview of the crews entered for the Girls Sch/Jun 4+ event. It looks to be a strong draw, so here’s hoping these girls finally get a chance to race one another!
KRC Kingston RC (E Shelton)
The Kingston RC crew had a successful race at Head of the River 4s, taking gold in the girls Sch/Jun coxed fours event. At Hampton Head, the WJ16 coxless four came second at Hampton Head. Despite scant results for the crew, it will be interesting to see how the girls do.
TSS Tideway Scullers School (A Chapman)
Tideway Scullers are known for producing outstanding performances across their squads, with record numbers of athletes competing in events including Henley Royal Regatta and Henley Women’s Regatta, as well as gaining selection for GB. The junior women have given strong performances in the selection of races they’ve competed in this season, most recently taking home a gold medal in the Band 2 junior women’s coxed fours at Head of the River 4s in 2019. The club also took gold medals in the junior women’s Band 1 and Band 2 coxless quads, with multiple victories across the other squads also.
EMA Emanuel School (L McAuliffe)
The Emanuel School crew is also looking as if it has a strong chance at placing well. Lauren McAuliffe represented GB at Home International Regatta in 2019, in both the WJ18 eight and coxed four, despite being only 16 at the time. She also came 51st out of 119 in the single scull at GB junior trials last season. The girls raced at Bedford Regatta, coming 2nd overall in the quad, and at Wallingford Regatta came 5th in the WJ18 quad and 4th in the WJ18 coxed four respectively. Last year at SHORR the crew members raced in the eight, coming an impressive 6th overall. It’s difficult to predict how well they will do, as there a more results for this crew than for many of the others entered, however a number of Emanuel School pupils went to trials last season, suggesting that they have a strong squad this season.
GLT Godolphin & Latymer School (C Corrigan)
At Wallingford Regatta 2019, the crew took third place in the Women’s Challenge coxed fours, a great achievement seeing as they were racing both senior and junior crews alike. The squad also raced in the Championship girls coxless four at National Schools’, coming 6th in the A final.
