Schools’ Head of the River 2020 – Ch J16 8+ Preview

A note from the Commissioning Editor

Yet again, as it has been with so many times with articles and races this season, I am obliged to write a disclaimer above the article. The cancellation of School’s Head, like with all events that have not take place, will be a disappointment to everyone. This one is more significant, with weather finally being on our side, the community thought we would finally get some good racing and start to put together a season, Coronavirus had other ideas. Anyway, here is the Ch J16 8+ preview as it would have been if School’s Head happened.

The pinnacle race of the Junior Head Race season, the Schools’ Head is the first time we get to see those crews who will be at the front of the junior rowing scene for this summer. There will be very competitive racing, against not only with the 11 boats, but also the notorious Championship course from Chiswick Bridge to Putney.

Eton College – Hinchliffe

As we know Eton holds a lot of history for this category and the whole event, so we most likely will see a lot of wins across the board for Eton. As a club Eton are reigning champions of this category so they will have a lot at stake this Wednesday. There hasn’t been any recent show of results for this crew. However they are first in the start order, this suggests that they have a high CRI score under their belts.

Shiplake College – Schonwandt

Shiplake, another top college renowned for its sweeping results across the board for junior rowing. With this crew chasing Eton on Wednesday, this will give them a clear chance on what they can do against the top college Eton. With recent wins at Hampton Head and a 2nd place at Quintin Head this crew will have to put in a big performance on Wednesday.

Windsor Boys’ School – Warren

Windsor Boys’ School might be looked at as an underdog in this category because of them being so low down in the start order, but most of last seasons results was mainly based with sculling for the boys from Windsor. This is shown in winning the J15 8x+ at Sculling Head in dorney this time last year. Therefore Windsor Boys could have taken the sweep programme pretty easily and could have a chance getting a top place this Wednesday.

Prediction we know how big Shiplake’s and Eton’s programme is but I could see Windsor being a big underdog in this category.
1st – Shiplake College
2nd – Windsor Boys
3rd – Eton College
