Schools’ Head of the River 2020 – GJ16 8+ Preview

Schools’ Head is the prize at the end of the head season and, with limited water time for all crews this winter, it will be interesting to see who has combatted this by putting the extra work in on land. For these girls, this race will act as an important marker going into regatta season, so we can expect to see some strong crews and some even closer times.

Henley RC – Vickerman

Placing 2nd at the recent Quintin Head, we can see this crew has apt experience racing on the Thames. At this recent event they came in just in front of Marlow RC, a marginal lead they will no doubt look to widen this time round.

Lady Eleanor Holles School – Middleton

Lady Eleanor Holles won the WJ16 8+ category at Hampton Head last month, showing a potentially very strong crew who we can expect to put a quick time down on Wednesday, but potentially less Tideway experience than Henley?

Marlow RC – Kelland-Shorthose

This crew came in 2nd at Hampton Head, only 5 seconds behind Lady Eleanor Holles, and 3rd at Quintin Head a couple of weeks previously, only 14 seconds behind Henley. These recent results will be strong motivators for this crew going into Wednesday as they’ll be looking to significantly close these gaps.

Predictions

Overall, I think we can expect to see two very close times between Lady Eleanor Holles and Henley, with Henley just taking the top spot, and then Marlow closely coming in 3rd. That said, with little results from earlier in the season for the other two crews in the category, they should not be underestimated, and we could very well see them give the top three a run for their money.
