Schools’ Head of the River 2024 – Open Junior 16 First Eights Preview

As we approach the final months of the school rowing season, we are entering a crucial period with only a short amount of time between Schools’ Head and National Schools’ Regatta. At Schools’ Head, ambitious crews can gauge the effectiveness of their winter training and determine how they measure up against their competitors.

It is widely recognised that Schools’ Head is not only the most prestigious head race for school crews, but also one of the most difficult. Finishing at the Westminster Boathouse on Putney Embankment and spanning over 4.5 miles of the renowned Championship course, there is ample opportunity for excitement and suspense to unfold.

St George’s School

St George’s had an impressive J15 season, finishing fourth in the time trial at National Schools’, just behind some of the country’s top rowing schools. They also secured the silver medal in the J15 category at Schools’ Head in 2023s year. With this strong track record, it is likely that they will aim to surpass last year’s results and secure a victory this weekend, while also competing competitively in the J16 championship eights.

Kew House School

Following closely behind St George’s is Kew House School. Despite a disappointing 22nd place finish in the time trial at National Schools’ last previous year, they will have been working hard to improve this winter, so it will be interesting to see if they can demonstrate their progress and achieve a top three finish.

Winchester School

Winchester School, positioned behind these crews, had a notable J15 season, finishing third at Schools’ Head last year, just behind St George’s. They also performed well during the summer racing season, securing 17th place at National Schools’ Regatta. With their strong performance at Schools’ Head and familiarity with the course, they are likely to put on a competitive performance.

Predictions

Given that all four crews will aim for a top three finish, the racing will be fierce. However, I am confident that St George’s School, with their recent strong results and familiarity with the course, will secure the top spot. Winchester is expected to follow closely behind, while the battle for third place will likely be between Kew House and King’s School, Worcester.
