Schools’ Head of the River 2024 – Women’s First Eights Preview

The crews racing next week will be faced with the unique challenges of the Tideway during one of the most awaited head races of the season – Schools’ Head of the River 2024. This is one of the most exciting opportunities for junior women’s teams to push themselves to the limit and consolidate their tough winter training as we enter the sharp end of the school rowing season.

Godolphin and Latymer Boat Club

The black and red blades of this crew are ready to pick up what they left off last year where they fell short 9 seconds behind Sir William Perkin’s School Boat Club, also returning. The crew has had continuous practice on the Tideway waters since, where their impressive 5th place finish at Quintin Head suggests good progression. They pulled a quick time at Women’s Head too recently in a large and very competitive pool, suggesting they may well put up a fight on the water.

Sir William Perkin’s School Boat Club

Anticipate strong performance from the talented girls of Sir William Perkin’s School Boat Club on the Tideway. They have demonstrated exciting results during the recent races this year – from securing a notable achievement such as placing 62nd in the field of 158 seniors at Women’s Head of the River on the 9th of March, to coming 3rd at Wycliffe Head in February. With a few GB trialists in the boat, Sir William Perkin’s Boat Club is looking ready to recreate their victory on this course from last year.

Kingston Grammar School

Kingston Grammar School have also performed well recently, having placed 6th at Quintin Head a mere .1 of a second behind Godolphin and Latymer, and giving a strong performance at WEHORR. With some of the most competitive crews absent from this category, they may be a good contender for one of the top spots.

Other crews such as Putney High School Boat Club will have great knowledge of the Tideway, giving them a competitive edge. With other clubs like Emanuel School Boat Club and The King’s School, Canterbury also in the mix, it’s sure to be good competition.

Predictions

It is difficult to predict whether Sir William Perkin’s School Boat Club will be the winning crew this year, as there will be a strong fight from Godolphin and Latymer Boat Club for the first place – though Godolphin’s strong progress this season may see them pull ahead.
