As the fifth weekend of racing approaches, 46 crews will take to the 4750m stretch of water on the River Wear at Sunderland City Rowing Club. With typical cold weather ahead, we are excited to see which crews rise to the challenge of racing as the temperature drops.
Women’s Junior 15 Single
Like at Wansbeck Long Distance Sculls (Wansbeck LDS), Lewis from Cambois Rowing Club and Gritton from Chester-Le-Streer Amateur Rowing Club will again battle for the win. These two talented athletes frequently race each other in the morning and then race together in their highly successful double in the afternoon; this means they are well aware of the other’s racing style and ability, which will lead to some of the most exciting racing of the day. Lewis has already won five races in her single this season, including Wansbeck LDS, where she narrowly beat Gritton over the shorter 2000m course.
Open Junior 15 Single
First in the start order for this category is Shaw from Cambois Rowing Club, who won Wansbeck LDS in the Open Junior 15 single and Tyne Small Boats Head in the Open Junior 15 double. He will race against Simpson from Chester-Le-Street Amateur Rowing Club and Allinson from Sunderland City Rowing Club, who trains on the stretch of river where the race will be held. Will Allinson’s experience on the river prove enough to beat Shaw and Simpson, or will Shaw’s winning streak continue?
Open Junior 18 Single
Macdonald from Sunderland City Rowing Club will set off first for this category. This athlete often races in a single and has already been victorious this season at Tyne Single Scullers Head, where he was the fastest junior single by over ten seconds. There will be fierce intraclub competition in this category as Macdonald will be racing Dixon who is also from Sunderland City Rowing Club. This race will surely be exhilarating to watch and compete in, as both athletes train and regularly race together.
Open and Women’s Junior 14 Single
With only one rower in each category, it will be interesting to see which single will be the fastest. Eke from Berwick Rowing Club has already had a successful start to his season with wins at Tyne Single Scullers Head and Berwick Head. Simpson from Chester-Le-Street Amateur Rowing Club has also kicked off her season well, as she won Wansbeck LDS last weekend. It will be interesting to see if these athletes can chase down any older competitors starting before them.
Open Masters CDE Quad
In this category, seven crews will battle it out for the win. Kenyon, who will set off fourth in the start order, has already managed to win the Open Masters EHI quad for Tees Rowing Club at Tees Long Distance Sculls earlier this season. They will race the crew from Talkin Tarn Rowing Club, who have also secured a win this year in the Open Masters CDEG quad at Wansbeck LDS. The racing should be tight as each crew has won or has come close to winning over the season.
Women’s Masters CD Single
Terry from Durham Amateur Rowing Club is the favourite to win, as she already has an impressive haul of medals. She won the Women’s Intermediate eight at the British Rowing Masters Championships 2024. Terry is also a talented sculler, proven by her medal at Wansbeck LDS in the Women’s Masters DGH single. Will Terry be able to row to yet another victory, or will Milburn from Tyne United Rowing Club prove to be faster?
