South Hylton Long Distance Sculls 2018 – Junior Men’s Preview

We have finally reached the penultimate race of the LDS series, and for once, it looks like we won’t be cancelled, so hopefully this small field of 80 can race on what is looking to be a blustery day, occurring on the same day as fours head. South Hylton is a tricky course, running through the Wear, which we shall revisit in Durham next week, but a trickier course here, as well as longer at 4750m. Fingers crossed that we are able to race this week!

Junior Men’s Quads

J18 4x- Only one entry, from Durham ARC, who presumably will be looking to continue on the legacy of last years’ quad, and with only one returner from the end of last season, this will be a hard task, but this should be a good opportunity to gauge their speed.

J16 4x- Two entries, one from St Leonards, one from Sunderland City. We’ve seen a bit from SLS this year, seeing them place 3rd in J16 4x- at Tyne LDS, however there has not been any showing from Sunderland City, but being on their home course is an obvious advantage. I’m predicting a close race, with SLS edging it.

Junior Men’s Doubles

J16 2x – Only one JM double entry for the competition this weekend, coming in the form of a J16 2x from DARC. Bit of unknown quantity, but will be a good opportunity to see their early season speed.

Junior Men’s singles

J18 1x – Three entries this week, with Slater and Adamson of Chester le Street, and Hudson of Tyne ARC. This should be an expected win for Adamson, with him being a class above the rest, having competed at Junior Worlds last year, and placing 6th at BRSC in open doubles this year. I then expect a second place finish for Slater, closely followed by Hudson.

J17 1x – Two entries, an intra-squad competition from CLS, with an expected win from Graham, after his superior performances this year.

J16 1x – Three entries- Talkin Tarn, CLS and St Leonards. Out of the three, the sculler from Talkin Tarn, Norman, has been the quickest, so I predict a win from him here.
