The penultimate race is here after last weekend’s racing at Wansbeck was also cancelled due to high winds. Juniors across the region will be more than raring to go now- contrasting the usual feelings (at this point in the sculling series) of exhaustion. Should Saturday go ahead, I will expect some very good racing across the 4750m course through Sunderland, as the girls will really be looking to make their mark on this 2018/19 season, despite the recent cancellations.
WJ18/17 4x-
There are a solid number of entries here with many crews that have all been successful over the past year. The Tyne crew returns from their win in Berwick and on the Tyne, which puts them in a strong position to make it three in a row. It will be Durham ARC chasing them down, who haven’t raced since early July and so it will be interesting to see how much speed they have gained over the past few months. The City of Sunderland crew do have a home water advantage, but we are also yet to see how they will fair against their opposition- making their result hard to judge. The only WJ17 crew entered comes from St Leonard’s School– who have beaten some of these WJ18 crews before and so are also in contention against the girls a year older than themselves.
WJ17 2x
It was this Cambois entry that won this event on the Tyne (their first notable win) which could suggest this season they will provide good competition. However, the Tyne girls have been strong in the quad and should have a similarly good performance in the double- as their squad does have strength in depth.
WJ16 2x
Two weeks ago, at Berwick, it was Tyne that won this category, beating their own WJ16 quad in the process and some boys doubles too. The Cambois and Durham entries here are yet to race in the LDS and so will need a good performance to take the title from Tyne.
WJ18/17 1x
Three entries in this category (CLS Hall, Dowson and Cambois Furness) spent last weekend at the National Water Sports Centre, on the GB potential camp, which should provide for some impressive racing and times- with the girls battling it out before they head to Boston in 2 weeks for Early ID trials. The boats from Tyne and City of Sunderland will be looking to make their mark against the region’s top female single scullers- although it should be Cambois that take the win.
WJ16 1x
The Chester-Le-Street Wilkinson boat won at Berwick, though it would be a big ask for her, or the Tyne entry, to beat CLS Warren who will in fact be looking to be fastest Junior women’s 1x of the day, due to her vast experience and talent that she has proven to have many times before.
