Following the cancellation of three consecutive races in this series we are hoping to see South Hylton LDS this weekend. Hosted by City of Sunderland Rowing Club, this course will be a challenge being notoriously not easy to navigate. The field this weekend is much reduced compared with other events in this series and a number of scullers find themselves without competition. We will, however, see some excellent racing in the Masters quads and singles in addition to some interesting battles in the junior events.
The Masters DEH Coxless Quad
This event features three crews total from Talking Tarn, Tees and Durham Amateur respectively. Based upon results from this season it looks like the Kenyon crew from Tees are the favourites, with Talkin Tarn and Durham Amateur albeit both strong crews in their own right, chasing them for second place.
Open J17 Single
This single event will see Hills from Chester-le-Street going up against three scullers from Sunderland City. Dixon, MacDonald and Urwin all have home water advantage. Dixon and MacDonald will likely lead the way. MacDonald would have gotten the better of his clubmate at Tees LDS if it weren’t for a 30- second penalty, Saturday is an opportunity to rectify that result.
Masters E Single
A large field in the Masters E Single should provide a very close race. Green from York City, Buckworth from Tees and Hall from Tyne are most likely going to provide the winner and a strong start to the head season by Green places him as the favourite. Hall from Tyne United, Miller from Chester-le-Street and Fairholm from Cambois will all be looking to make an impact on the result and could challenge the three favourites.
Masters GH single
Some familiar faces feature in the Masters GH Single with three scullers who know each other well competing. Jones from Tees, Jaggard from Durham Amateur and Thompson from Tyne United, are going head to head and fresh from a victory at Tess LDS Jones will be confident. Jaggard from Durham Amateur is however the probable winner this weekend given recent results such as winning the Masters A/B 1x at Durham City this year (without handicap).
Open J18 2x
Once again we are pleased to Lambton Rowing Club entering multiple crews into junior events including two in the Open J15 Double. The Thompson crew from Lambton are clear favourites against their local rivals from Durham Amateur and a second crew, Watkins from Lambton. The Wrack crew from Durham Amateur may push Thompson close, however, will likely be battling for second place with the Watkins crew.
