The season has begun again for the junior rowers in Ireland and this year it’s going
to be bigger and better than ever, with St Michael’s Head of the River serving as the first race of the year, and the first chance that crews will be able to gauge how well the training they have already done is going to serve them this season.
St Michaels A
This crew will be out for the win as this is St Michael’s own head of the river. Putting down their mark for the season will be vital. Stroke, Robyn Marley will be continuing her strong lead as the stroke in the St Michaels A crew from the Irish Rowing Championships where they came sixth overall after a compelling A-final.
Enniskillen Royal Boat Club A
The Enniskillen crew will be competing fiercely with three of the four girls in this boat having secured an Irish Championship win in July. Leading the team from the stroke position is Kate Huddlestone who in 2023 stroked the Women’s Junior 18 eight to second place. There is no doubt that a promising season lies ahead for Enniskillen. They claimed this title last year, but the question remains – can they do it again?
Cork Boat Club
Cork secured second place in this event last year, which positions them favourably for a potential victory this year. Sadhbh McDonnell will be stroking the girls’ quad, having participated in trials with Ireland last year she will be contributing a strong rhythm across the three kilometre course. This crew possesses significant potential for the upcoming season.
I believe that the Enniskillen crew has the potential to secure the victory in this event due to Enniskillen’s long track record of the speed in the quad events, with Cork Boat Club and St Michael’s following closely behind. This competition will serve as an excellent benchmark for the events to follow as well as crews establishing themselves in preparation for the Irish Trials.
