As the longer evenings draw near and the head of the river season concludes,
the competition for titles in July intensifies. The men’s junior quads promises to be an exciting race featuring 12 entries from clubs across the country; these are the crews to watch.
St Micheal’s Rowing Club
This course serves as St Michael’s primary training facility, yet whether this will be enough for them to
push for the win remains to be seen. With crew member Zach Arthur achieving a time of 6:55.6 in the 2K event at the Irish Indoor Rowing Championships, this quad certainly has the raw power on board needed to push onto the podium.
Muckross Rowing Club
Muckross undoubtedly ranks among the premier sculling clubs in Ireland. Having secured
second place at St Michael’s Head last October, one wonders if they have made sufficient progress during winter to ascend to the top position. Although none of the crew participated in the indoor rowing competition last month, seeing if their training efforts translate to on-water success will be intriguing.
Cork Boat Club
Cork Boat Club witnessed an impressive performance from Conall Gilliard, finishing seventh
overall with a time of 6:29.5, and from Killian O’Mahony, who recorded a time of 6:47.3 at the
Irish Indoor Championships last month, while stroke seat Sean McGugh completed the race
in 6:55.1. This crew is undoubtedly fast and poised to navigate the challenging conditions of
O’Brien’s Bridge. With a strong average over two kilometres, they are well-prepared to significantly impact the rest of the field.
Predictions:
Although there are many participants in this event, I believe that Cork Boat Club will emerge as the frontrunner and achieve victory at O’Brien’s Bridge. St Michael’s and Muckross will likely compete closely for the second and third positions.
