Team Northern JIRR 2018 – Review

The 2018 Junior Inter-Regional Regatta was a day to remember; not only for the incredible standard of racing, but also the uncharacteristically good conditions that Nottingham greeted us with.  An initial tail-wind died down for the finals as Holme Pierrepoint provided the flat water of a rower’s dreams. Finishing with joint 6th in the girl’s and 8th in the boy’s events gave Northern an overall 7th place finish- an achievement to be proud of. Here are the stand-out performances from our representatives:

Roman Bowery, racing in the J15 1x, came home with our only gold medal and there’s no doubt that he did so in style, winning by a convincing three lengths. Having recently trialled for GB a year early, Roman seems to be a very promising talent for the future and we look forward to seeing if he can maintain the dominance shown on Saturday.

Similarly, Caitlin Warren in the WJ15 1x proved that she could, indeed, rise to the occasion and claimed the silver medal- missing out on gold by only 4 seconds. Another star of the future, Caitlin will be looking to push on and repeat this result, against other big names and clubs, at events such as National Schools and British Championships.

A second silver medal was produced by the boys in the J16 4+, after a brilliant display of sweep rowing and a huge final surge for the line, there was less than a second between the top 3 crews. Overall, a superb performance, against some tough opposition, which gained some vital points for Northern.

Team Northern’s fourth medal came from Erin Temple in the WJ14 1x. Some excellent racing and sculling shown by Erin meant that she was just 4 seconds off the silver medal and, at such a young age, she has definitely already made her name known on a national scale.

The closest race of the day came from the J15 4x+ where the top 4 boats were all separated by 0.76 of a second- but it was northern who came away with fourth. After an epic row, there’s no doubt that these boys will do everything they can to make sure that next time around they will be on the podium.

More 4th place finishes came from both; the J14 4x+ and the WJ14 4x+ suggesting that some big performances, and hopefully wins, are still to come from these very young scullers.

A promisingly rapid time from the WJ6 2x (in the heat) saw the girls go into the A final ranked 2nd but where made to settle for 5th, nevertheless a great result in a very competitive event.

Another fantastic performance came from the girls of the WJ16 8+, with not much time spent together as a crew they showed that they were more than capable of performing when under pressure- resulting in a 6th place finish.

A fantastic day, with even better rowing- all eyes are now on Eton Dorney, for the National Schools’ Regatta.
