The Boat Race 2024 – Fixture Series #1 Review and Analysis (CUBC Women vs Brookes)

Cambridge Women’s crews suffered comprehensive losses to Oxford Brookes today in the latest set of fixtures before the 2024 Boat Race.

Crews battled against difficult river conditions, each doing two pieces over the Championship Course.

The Light Blue’s A crew lost by 0.5 lengths and 2.5 lengths in their two pieces, with American Hannah Murphy taking to the coxing seat and James Trotman instead coxing the B boat.

Trotman’s crew, however, did not fare any better against a strong Brookes contingent, losing by 2.5 and over 5 lengths.

These victories against Paddy Ryan’s squad only add to the stellar record of Brookes. A fortnight ago, they defeated Oxford Women’s A crew by around three-quarters of a length in two pieces before confusion over the finish point in the third piece.

Brookes’ clean sweep today continued against CUBC Lightweights, with two 5 length victories.

The picture was more mixed elsewhere, however, with the Cambridge Lightweight Men taking on London Rowing Club and each crew earning a win.

While these fixtures were not live-streamed, those keen to catch the warm-up to the Boat Race will be able to tune in on 25th February when Cambridge Women take on Thames Rowing Club and Oxford Men take on Leander.
