The JRN End-Of-Season Awards 22/23 – Race of the Year Winner

JRN are delighted to announce that the Championship Boys Eights, Semi-Final (2) at the National Schools’ Regatta is our Race of the Year.

To see three of the country’s finest schoolboy eights sprinting to the line at the national championships is special in its own right. When you then factor in the reality that the results of this race would determine lane draws for the final and provide shelter for those who fared well and expose to the elements those who did not, then you have a recipe for pure drama. That is exactly how this epic played out – three of the fastest eights in the UK pitching for the best possible seat at the table and crossing the line exhausted and locked together in almost inseparable unison (less than 0.3 seconds to be exact). A truly remarkable example of junior rowing and one that will live long in the memory.

George Hammond, former Chairman of the National Schools’ Regatta, commented: “It was a classic QM semi-final and I had the privilege of umpiring the race- all eight crews put in a magnificent performance, all racing hard to the end, a credit to all schools participating.”

With similar sentiment, John Gearing, Head Coach at Radley College said: “On the day we all realised what an important race it would be as a win would all but guarantee a medal in the final with the crosswind predicted to increase during the day. However in hindsight I believe it was a turning point in the season which probably impacted the results in the PE too.”
