The Pairs Head of the River 2014 Preview – Women’s J18 Pairs

WJ182-
The Pairs Head is the first major sweeping event of the new season, and for many of the J18 pairs racing, the head will be a good indication of initial speed and will give every crew targets to work on through the approaching winter. There are fourteen entries in this particular event, with a large LEH presence taking to the water this Saturday. In fact, I would say that it is LEH who are in the best position to win. The pair of Harwood and Kelly share some impressive results between them, with Kelly making up half of the LEH crew that took silver in the J16 women’s pairs at Brit Champs and Harwood coming a close 5th in the same event at Nat Schools. 16 seconds ahead of Harwood’s pair at NSR were the crew from Putney High (Lofstedt/Andrews), who placed third overall at the regatta. This pair will be quick come Saturday, however I’m uncertain as to whether they could beat LEH’s Harwood/Kelly. Perhaps tideway experience will be Putney High’s advantage? The St. Paul’s Girls’ duo are my best bet to take third, based on the fact that in the past, they have produced some fairly quick pairs, which have later gone on to succeed in the summer.
