Scullers Head, or Vesta sculls is one of the most important small boat heads on the calendar and every year attracts hundreds of scullers wanting to try and win one of the most prestigious small boat head races on the Calendar. Stretching from Chiswick Bridge to Putney Bridge, it is a very gruelling race, being 7KM in total; A true test of endurance, navigation and pure will. Missing the race last year was a real shame for everyone, and with it being pushed forward a couple a months, not only will there be a few less layers, there may be some surprising results.
As a disclaimer to this article, It has been tricky to find information on these individuals, therefore this pre-view is based purely upon previous results of the clubs and the performances of their previous athletes in this age group, unless concrete information is available.
Windsor Boys School – J. Truter (120):
One individual in particular that I have placed as one of my favourites is Jakob Truter who placed and impressive 6th in the British Rowing Championships time trial, unfortunately he wasn’t able to cement his position and for sure will be wanting some form of vindication from that result and will be fighting for the top positions if not the win.
Tideway Sculling School- M. Pendred (122):
Tideway Sculling School has a reputation unlike many others on the tideway, and J16 is the year that the majority of these crews start to mature and really dominate the field, a lot is to be expected from this sculler during this race, and especially as this is the local water for this club, a placement in the top 3 shouldn’t be unexpected.
Kings College School – J. Duggan (121):
Kings College School is a wildcard, they have some results to back themselves but they are not known as a “rowing school”, thus an entry into this prestigious event suggests a level of confidence within their single sculler, meaning that I place a reasonable level of expectation on this sculler to place In the top 5.
Newark Rowing club – J.Hole (123):
Newark Rowing club is one of these clubs that seems to produce a large amount of competent crews over the year, and if J.Hole making the trek all the way from Newark Rowing Club on the Trent, there must be a level of anticipation that this sculler is going to do well at this years Vesta Sculls.
Other competitors:
There are four individuals entering from Windsor Boys School this year, Windsor boys have historically always had quite a strong showing at vesta sculls, having large numbers of entries each year and the boys all placing quite highly. I would expect the top positions to be dominated by Windsor Boys School; P. Theriaga (104), J.Harlow (105), S. AL Qahef (111), A.Chute (117):
My Predictions are:
- Windsor Boys School – J Truter(120)
- Tideway Sculling School – M.Pendred (122)
- Newark Rowing Club – J.Hole (123)
