Vesta Scullers Head has to be one of the toughest races in the calendar. The 6.8 km in a single scull is equally as mentally demanding as it is physically demanding. The scullers will also have to deal with the Tideway’s unpredictable conditions, which could make for some interesting racing this weekend.
Wycliffe College Boat Club
Wycliffe have entered three singles into the WJ17 category: Fullman, Burton and Dewar. Of these three, Fullman appears to have the upper hand as she won the WJ16 single scull at the 2021 British Rowing Junior Championships, but she was closely followed by Burton in third place. Both of them also won the B Final of the J16 Girls Quads at the 2021 National Schools’ Regatta.
Team Keane Sculling School
Burne is the sole entry for Team Keane in the WJ17 category at this year’s Scullers Head. She was in quads that came fourth in the C Final in the JW18 category at the 2021 British Rowing Junior Championships and 23rd in the Girls J16 Quads at the 2021 National Schools’ Regatta. Burne also has the advantage of home water this weekend which should give her the upper hand in terms of steering on a course that is notoriously difficult to steer well.
Newark Rowing Club
Newark have also entered just one sculler into the WJ17 category. Joy was a member of the Newark J16 Girls Quad that came 14th at the 2021 National School’s Regatta and 2nd in the B Final at the 2021 British Rowing Championships. It will be interesting to see if she can translate this speed into a single scull.
Prediction
It will be hard to look past the Wycliffe scullers this weekend, so I’m backing Fullman to take the win, closely followed by Burton.
