Here we go again! Every year Vesta Scullers Head marks the start of the head racing season, or for some, the end of their well-deserved rest. With that being said, we are being treated to excellent racing in the Women’s Championship category. This category is an excellent showing for the recently ended/re-branded GB start programme.
Kathryn Mole (Uni of Birmingham)
Yorkshire Start graduate Kathryn Mole has cropped up again and again within the world of high-performance women’s sculling. Having secured the win last year, Katie is the one to watch this year. Although she faced disappointment the last time, she hit the tideway in the Wingfield Sculls (after colliding with Imogen Grant), she had a successful season last year, winning bronze at the European Universities Rowing Championship in her single, and several wins at Home International Regatta. I am sure she will have her eyes on the prize.
Georgie Robinson Ranger (University of London)
Having raced at the Youth Olympics and the World Rowing Junior Championships, as well as securing a silver medal in the 4- at the World Rowing Under 23s Championships, as well as endless achievements with UL, Georgie Robinson Ranger is strong competition. Although much of her success remains in the sweep category, she graced the Henley Royal course in the single and was also a competitor of Wingfield sculls. I look forward to seeing what she can do on the day.
Perri McCluskey (Strathclyde)
Perri McCluskey jumps form strength to strength, year after year, starting as a member of the World Class Start Programme. Like many of the competitors in this category, Perri raced for the Stoner Challenge Trophy (Women’s 2x) at Henley Royal Regatta, having made the final in the 2x at Henley Women’s Regatta, losing to the GB under 23 2x.
Jade Lindo (Leander)
Perri’s doubles partner Jade Lindo will be joining her on the start line. Jade, a member of the long lost Twickenham start Centre, has extensive racing experience with some excellent GB trial results in 2022.
Vwairé Obukohwo (Twickenham)
Speaking of Twickenham start and the GB under 23 2x, we will also see the talented Vwairé Obukohwo hit the tideway. Having won multiple world championship titles, Henley women’s regatta 2023 and a Henley Royal regatta 2023 finalist, beating the doubles of all the previously mentioned athletes, Vwairé seems untouchable.
No matter who you are routing for, I think we can all agree, we have been absolutely blessed with this year’s lineup for the Women’s championship category.
