Traditionally one of the last races of the calendar year in December, Vista Sculler’s Head has been moved to September, making it one of the first head races for aspirational single scullers to establish themselves.
The ‘Sculler’s Head’, taking place on the Tideway, is renowned for the necessity for skill and the fitness in order to complete the course, due to the unique conditions the Tideway throws at the young athletes. Of course, many Head races, including Sculler’s Head were cancelled in 2020, due to the Coronavirus Pandemic, therefore perhaps this event will be the first long distance event for the young WJ16 competitiors .
Team Keane Sculling School
Team Keane Sculling School have entered four scullers into this event. The WJ15 x4 competed in the British Rowing Championships, where they scored a victory in the E-Final, however we have not yet seen them compete in smaller boats in 2021. Team Keane kept up with their fitness and stamina training over lockdown and these past few months have been vital to get back training on the Thames, significantly aiding them a home advantage, hence putting them in a confident position for this weekend’s race.
Emanuel School
Emanuel School’s entry into the event sees two scullers representing the boat club: A Molloy and G Parkin. There is little knowledge on these two scullers, but with their training taking place on the Thames they again will be well placed to know the conditions of the Tideway.
Predictions
So, the experience of both crews training being on the Thames gives them both knowledge of how to row to the Tideway’s at times unforgiving conditions- perhaps a local derby is in the making. Possibly, Team Keene may take a slight advantage due to their potentially greater experience gained at last season’s national competition, but I am unsure to predict an outright winner.
