As many club’s first regatta of the season, Wallingford LDS is a great chance for junior athletes to practice long distance racing as we venture further into the head Season. As for the line up, the WJ16 1x category has 25 entries from some very tough contenders such as Henley Rowing Club, Headington School and Maidenhead. The jump from J15 to J16 is a big one so it will be interesting to see if these young athletes are able to step up to compete with last year’s timings.
Henley Rowing Club
Last year Henley were the top dogs for women’s junior rowing, winning Champ eights and WJ16 eights. We saw Henley’s Holly Cookson take silver at Brit Champs in the J15 1x so she will undoubtably be looking to be near the top of the results table this weekend as will her 4 other team mates competing in the WJ16 1x category.
Maidenhead Rowing Club
Maidenhead are out in full force with 6 entries. We saw a few strong performances from Maidenhead last year so it will be interesting to see how much the scullers have stepped on into this new and very fresh season.
Headington School Boat Club
Headington only have one entry in the single sculls event. Evie Holt was in the winning J15 girls coxed quad last year at National Schools’ Regatta achieving a win over Henley so it will be interesting to see the outcome of this race and whether Headington may be working their way back to the top again within junior rowing.
Predictions – We expect to see the likes of Henley, Maidenhead and Headington towards the top of the results table this year but anything can happen over 4.5k and steering will be key for these young athletes as they tackle a tricky S bend at around 1.5k in. A few other crews to keep an eye on are Evesham, City of Oxford and Emanuel School.
