This year’s J16 2x event, although not offering many crews, does promise some good racing from 3 high-tier rowing squads, at what is nationally recognised as a challenging event for young athletes. Perhaps we will witness some of the under 16’s first head racing experience- remember to pack extra layers!
Magdalen College Boat Club
Although they have had little success recently and are not a school known for their rowing, Magdalen College placed sixth in the A final of the J16 2nd 4x event at national schools, narrowly losing to King’s College School.
Maidenhead Rowing Club
Although their juniors have not had a particularly successful season Maidenhead as a club have competed in a wide range of events, from Henley Royal to Maidenhead regatta performing well in all events.
Wallingford Rowing Club
Wallingford Rowing Club sent more crews than the other two clubs to national schools and performed very well, winning bronze in the 2nd championship girl’s quad event. Last time Wallingford Sculling Head ran in 2018, Wallingford club came in a strong second place in this event, losing to Ross Rowing Club by a small margin of three seconds.
Prediction
Despite the fact that three of these clubs have had success in the past I think the larger, powerful squad from Maidenhead will most likely prevail on the uncertain course.
