Wallingford Regatta is an excellent way to kick off the first normal regatta season in 3 years. A high standard of competition coupled with a venue of Dorney Lake promises an entertaining day for all those concerned.
The Windsor Boys School
Having finished the head season with some very impressive results it is the Windsor Boys School who have the most to live up to this summer. A squad with strength in numbers (4 quads in the top ten at Schools Head) means the season ahead could well be coloured green and gold. With an entry to Challenge 4x it seems most likely the two crews in Jun 4x are the club’s 2nd and 3rd boats which I expect will win and make A final respectively.
Leander Club
Leander has consistently been the second fastest crew so far this season. The 20 second gap between them and Windsor’s 1st boat is one they’re unlikely to close but with that crew not racing in a junior category on Sunday; Wallingford may be one of the few opportunities this season they get to come out on top.
South African Schools Rowing Union
It’s always exciting to see international crews racing especially after the lack of international travel over the past few years. It’s anyone’s guess as to how fast this crew but to come all this way means they must have something to show. Most likely the national champions of the country they’ve surely got to be of a standard to compete with the likes of Windsor.
Prediction:
Windsor and Leander are a class above the rest and it will be a close run thing between them although the South Africans could well upset that. Further down the field clubs such as Henley, Claires Court, Kingston, Kings School Worcester and the WBS 3rd boat all seem to beof a broadly similar speed and those final 3 spaces in the A final will be hard fought.
