Wallingford Regatta 2023 – Women’s Club Sweep Preview

Club Eights

Upper Thames RC, City of Bristol RC, Cantabrigian RC and Nottingham RC are standout entries in the Women’s Club Eights. Racing between these clubs has been close throughout the winter head season. WEHORR produced some tight results with City of Bristol, Cantabrigian and Nottingham all finishing within six seconds of each other.

City of Bristol in particular will head into this weekend with growing confidence off the back of an impressive winter missing out on winning WEHORR’s Provincial Club Pennant to Tyne ARC. Cantabrigian comfortably won Wallingford in 2022 and are always strong club contenders, whilst Nottingham cannot be underestimated. Upper Thames should be targeting this event, with bigger clubs entered in the Challenge Eights. They beat City of Bristol by over ten seconds at WEHORR, so will aim to sustain this dominance over 2km.

Expect a close race this weekend. Upper Thames will get the win with City of Bristol and Cantabrigian close in second and third.

Club Coxless Fours

With a similar entry list to the Club Eights, it will be interesting to see how the Coxless Fours compare. Upper Thames have two crews entered and their ‘A’ crew will certainly be challenging for top spot. City of Bristol have impressed in smaller boats throughout the head race season, whilst Cantabrigian are always strong in this event. Not to be forgotten are Wallingford RC. Having not entered in as many events as their rivals they will likely be focusing their efforts on the coxless four. The crew won Henley Fours and Eights Head in February, beating Upper Thames and City of Bristol, so will aim to maintain this position this weekend.

Wallingford will take top spot, ahead of a close race between Upper Thames, Cantabrigian and City of Bristol. The former two will finish just ahead of Bristol.

Club Coxed Fours

The Women’s Club Coxed Fours is difficult to predict with a range of clubs entered. Thames RC and Vesta RC both have boats racing so it will be interesting to see how these crews compare to ‘A’ boats from far smaller clubs. Cantabrigian as usual cannot be underestimated in a four and likewise Worcester RC are not unknown for springing a surprise.

Cantabrigian will edge the win over Thames and Vesta.
