With the season slowly starting to shape up, all heads are turned to the Weybridge Silver Sculls event that will take place on Saturday. The event will take place over a 3300m course that run from Little Wier to Elmbridge Canoe Club.
Of course, the question everyone at this event will be asking is who is going to perform the strongest out of the Junior 16 double sculls? If we cast our mind back to last year’s results Walton put out a dominant performance with their J16 double scull, taking the crown of the fastest J16.2x of the day, with Whitgift Sch BC taking second and Tideway Scullers taking the last spot on the podium. But that was last year, and with a new crop of J16 the questions will be asked, which double can complete the course in the fastest time? Well I can tell you this much, this year we have a significantly larger flotilla of double sculls going racing, 28 this year compared to last years 19, so competition for the top spot will be a lot tougher and tighter, so every small marginal gain counts, however much boat speed these crews can coax out, no matter how small, could be the decider of the coveted title of fastest J16 2X. In addition to this we have some repeat faces, both of last year’s winning J15.2X from Weybridge RC, in the shape of A.Clare and N Didaskalou have made their way back into the competition, this time in separate boats however, so the chances for an underdog victory are still possible. Other formidable opponents showing their faces are H Zeghibe, from the Walton double that took home second place last year, and L Creighton from the Team Keane double that rounded out the top 3, so we are in for a riveting race on Saturday. The conditions for Saturday are looking favourable, with the wind picking up at about midday but being relatively quiet, so crews will not be battling ocean conditions, but will be dependent on their finesse and efficiency in the water to achieve top results.
