Challenge Academic is defined as a university crew whom have been racing for at least two years but not yet reached “late stages of significant nation competitions.” For this 2023 head race, we see a large number of experienced entries. With lovely racing weather being forecast for the weekend, it’s set to be a good competition.
First we see Durham University BC ‘B’, followed by University College London BC ‘A’, Bristol University BC ‘A’, and Warwick University BC ‘A’. The first four crews off are all experienced with the Thames, or come from university rowing programmes which follow an intense regimen. As such they will be best placed to perform well in this category.
We then see Leeds University BC ‘A’ with the depth of squat to also enter a ‘B’ boat. They are followed down by Southampton University BC ‘A’, University of York BC ‘A’, and Cardiff University RC ‘A’. These crews are travelling further to experience Tideway racing which will be less familiar to them, however, as experienced athletes there’s every chance that with a good row they could put themselves in contention.
Up next, Bath University BC ‘B’ and King’s College London BC. Although slightly further down the order, they are still strong clubs and I can guarantee that these boats will have determined girls them, fighting to win. These, however, are not the last girls to be set off and so will have the added benefits of being pursued, and also chasing down crews themselves.
Prediction
For this years Women’s Head of the River Race, I predict, Durham University BC to take the win, with strong wins from this 2023 winter season, they will only build on this. They will be closely followed by UCL and then Bristol. This will be an exciting race to watch. Best of luck ladies!
