This Saturday we come across a gruelling distance of 2500 metres that athletes have to lay down on the Gloucester Berkeley Canal this Saturday. The course is pretty straight forward with the slightest of bends and the course narrowing at the final stages. With 9 crews racing in this event it will be a cracker to say the least.
Hereford Cathedral School – Morgan – Jones
Coming into this season of the back of an incredible 2021 season with winning every national event that was to offer for them as J16’s. Qualifying for the Fawley Challenge Cup as just J16s, they have a great chance to do well this season. Although losing one of their athletes from this season to the prestigious Windsor Boys, this crew being J17s I have no doubt they will be within having a chance of getting the win on Saturday.
Wycliffe Junior Rowing Club – Palmer
On their home water, Wycliffe come into this as one of the few favorites to take the win. With most of these lads getting to the C Final at National Schools last season, we’d expect some even better things this season as Gwilym Johnson got a 45th place out of a strong 117 at the recent GB trials. With Gwilym getting in the first half of that field I’d highly believe that these lads would be fast enough to close the gap against the likes of Hereford Cathedral.
Monmouth Comprehensive School – Coates
Monmouth Comprehensive, a thriving state school within Wales which is always aiming to thrive and develop within the junior rowing world. With them entering a J18 quad this Saturday I’d expect them to do pretty well as Monmouth Comp has had Quads qualify for the Fawley Challenge Cup in the past and this could be another one of them crews.
Prediction:
With it still being the start of the season and these crews not having many racing, predictions are not always accurate, but if I was to put my money on crews succeeding this Saturday, this is what I’d expect:
1st: Hereford Cathedral School
2nd: Wycliffe Junior Rowing Club
3rd: Monmouth Comprehensive School
