Henley Royal Regatta 2022 – Saturday Briefing, Fawley Challenge Cup

Saturday Review:
St. Andrew Boat Club vs The Windsor Boys’ School ’A’
Both crews in this first Fawley Cup semi-final were quick off the line, with Windsor Boys’ School gaining a canvas by the end of the Island. Starting as they meant to go on, by the Barrier the Windsor crew was leading St. Andrews by 1 and ¾ lengths. By the half mile mark, it was clear the Windsor boys were relaxing into the race, sculling more cleanly and extending their lead to 2 lengths. Past Fawley they increased this to 2 and ½ lengths, to 3 by the ¼ mile mark and up to a lead of 4 lengths by the mile post. Although the Windsor boys had 4 and ½ lengths by the mile 1/8 post, the St. Andrews crew drew back to finish only 3 and ½ lengths behind Windsor Boys’ School ‘A’ boat.

Claire’s Court School vs The Windsor Boys’ School ’B’

Both crews rowed cleanly off the line in the second semi-final, with nothing to separate them off the end of the Island. At the ¼ mile mark, the Windsor crew were leading by half a length, extending this to 1 length by the Barrier with a higher rate than the Claire’s Court crew. Racing past Remenham farm the Windsor boys were warned for their steering, but still drew out their lead to 1 and ½ lengths approaching Fawley. Passing Remenham Club, the Claire’s Court crew were overrating the Windsor boys, but the latter maintained their lead of 1 and ½ lengths despite being warned again for their steering. At the mile 1/8 post the Claire’s Court crew closed the gap to 1 and a ¼ length, but despite their best efforts could not pass the Windsor Boys School who finished 1 length ahead.

Sunday Preview:

The Windsor Boys’ School ’A’ vs The Windsor Boys’ School ‘B’

The Windsor Boys’ ’A’ crew were again dominant in their semi-final, looking under control and smooth throughout. Their ’B’ boat counterparts had a harder time reaching the final with the Claire’s Court crew not giving in until the line, but again looked composed throughout. It is obviously a huge achievement for The Windsor Boys School to have locked out the final for the Fawley Cup, but after their respective performances this week, The Windsor Boys’ ’A’ crew look set to take the victory.
